The project is a series of sculptural paintings and photographs inspired by the short story The Yellow Wallpaper, written in 1892 by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and the late Victorian fabric and wallpaper patterns created by William Morris, Owen Jones and other artists in the 19th century.
The paintings consist of frames and pieces of men's garments, sculpturally shaped and woven into the flat background of the original fabric patterns of the era. The sculptural element - a piece of shirt - is camouflaged by the background pattern painted on it. It is a visual language that enters into a dialogue with the storyline of The Yellow Wallpaper, which portrays attitudes towards the mental and physical health of women living at that time. In this project, I try to re-interpret the visions of the female narrator who, in the story, is kept in a room covered with yellow wallpaper and begins to hallucinate seeing a woman creeping behind a pattern. By engaging visual elements from the past and present, the project is a way of seeking a contemporary approach to a problem based on a long history of patriarchy and social dynamics, echoes of which can still be seen and heard in current narratives.
