The installation mimics the display window arrangements found in popular clothing stores and present in our everyday city life. Those colourful, eye-catching spaces are specially designed to make clothes appear as attractive as possible. They don’t make us wonder about everything possibly standing behind their production: the working conditions, the ethical consequences, their actual value.
The project is a commentary on the phenomenon of unsustainable, destructive processes of clothes production and dyeing, often executed in outrageous conditions, with the use of almost slave labour, destroying entire ecosystems. The clothes displayed on the mannequins attract the viewer’s attention through their eye-catching visual composition and bright colours, but they turn out to be monstrous objects, they form a concept of excess, overload, and exaggeration.
The installation aims to remind the viewer of what lies behind the objects we purchase.
