Cromwell Place Gallery in London, 2023
A site-specific installation made entirely of willow, creates a large-scale network of organic forms meandering on the ground, between trees, on and between buildings, bringing to the surface an invisible part of the botanical garden - its underground network of mycelium connecting plants and trees over a widespread area, and playing an important role in the functioning of our biome.
Afterwards, I applied the same romantic concept to urban space, imagining a large system of roots and hyphal connections, present not only in the forest but also in cities. Bringing it out into the light and displaying in a busy place draws attention to other species that are part of our habitat, but also to new contexts of connection, collaboration and coexistence.
The project was initially developed as part of the Kew Wakehurst Nourish summer programme. The following year it was presented at Cromwell Place Gallery in London, as part of the Kensington + Chelsea Art Week festival.
