When I began my emigration journey, I set to work on a series of performance pieces documented in the form of photographs entitled ‘Where do you come from?’
The photographs were taken in New Zealand and Australia, where I had the opportunity to live, travel and observe the reality of the country, as well as my fragile immigrant status. The project was part of my interest in
and research on various aspects of the textile and fashion industry, such as overproduction and unsustainable practices. During my time in New Zealand, I created art projects using textiles from local shops, but none of them were manufactured nearby. At the same time, during daily interactions, I had to engage in the same polite chit-chat, answering questions about where I was from and whether I was on holiday, for almost two years, constantly reminding me of my unrootedness in this part of the world.
Reflecting on the international flow of goods in places like New Zealand, importing the vast majority of
goods from abroad, especially Asia, via container ships, I addressed this matter by using these fabrics for my performance and symbolically bringing them back to the sea in the form of a giant floating dress, which I wore as I entered the water.
